The Nissan Patrol is a body-on-frame heavy-duty 4×4 with a long South African following, sold here across the Y60 (GQ, 1987-1997), Y61 (GU, 1997-2016) and Y62 (2010-present) generations. The Y60 and Y61 are the workhorse Patrols favoured by farmers, hunters, overlanders and the SANDF. The most sought-after engine is the TD42 — a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated inline-six diesel renowned for indestructibility and easy servicing — followed by the TD42T/TD42Ti turbo variants and the smaller RD28 2.8-litre inline-six diesel (also turbo as RD28T). Petrol Patrols use the TB42E 4.2L inline-six, the TB45E 4.5L inline-six and later the TB48DE 4.8L DOHC inline-six. The Y62 moved to the VK56VD 5.6L V8 petrol with a 7-speed automatic. Known issues include RD28T head-gasket failure, TB48 timing chain rattle, leaking front diff seals, swivel-hub leaks on Y61 4×4 hubs, and ABS sensor faults.
